A man diagnosed with cancer who went on to help raise £500,000 for fellow sufferers with prostate cancer in Leicestershire has won a £3,000 Leicestershire First Award for volunteering. Stuart Berry was presented with the prize at half-time on Saturday [March 21] on the Walkers Stadium pitch by Foxes legend Alan Birchenall.

Two sisters who have given more than £1.5 million of surplus stock and other goods from businesses to a total of 150,000 people since setting up their charity eight years ago have been awarded a £3,000 Leicestershire First Award.

A grandmother who set up a performing arts group for her granddaughters and other children to learn how to sing and dance has won the £3,000 Community Builder Award from Leicestershire First.

A 77-year-old conservation volunteer who has put 36 years of volunteering into helping protect the Leicestershire countryside is the winner of the £3,000 Leicestershire First Environment Award.

The first of a new series of £3,000 awards to donate to good causes in Leicestershire has today been won by a music teacher. Helen Collins formed a choir of schoolboys and led them on a journey to the stage of the Royal Albert Hall and into the living rooms of the nation in the TV series The Choir.

Leicestershire First is a new charity established to promote the values of leadership, excellence and citizenship.  It was officially launched on June 6, 2008, at County Hall in Leicestershire.
